"this is a real innovation in the bus system. As you've all seen, electric buses are noisy, pollution-free and do not emit carbon dioxide or other greenhouse gases. We are taking an important step in the electrification of Chilean public transport, "said Pinera as he walked out of BYD," and these buses are comfortable and offer free Wi-Fi and USB mobile phone charging ports, as well as heating and cooling air conditioners. Will really improve the quality of life of Chileans. "

The 100 buses are equipped with self-developed lithium iron phosphate batteries developed by BYD, with a range of more than 250 kilometers. They arrived in Chile at the end of November after a 45-day sea voyage at the Nanjing production base in September and will be officially operational on the 15th of this month, operated by San Diego bus operator METBUS.

The Chilean government purchased a total of 200 Chinese electric buses and another 100 Yutong electric buses will arrive in Chile in January.

Li said BYD is leading a new era of global new energy transportation.

BYD entered the Latin American market in 2008 and established BYD Chile in 2014 to promote the electric vehicle business. BYD won Chile's first all-electric bus order in May last year, in partnership with Italy's state power company. In November of the same year, three BYD all-electric buses were put into operation in San Diego transportation system.

In June, the Chilean government released a survey showing that 740 local bus passengers polled BYD's electric bus with a 6.3-point high score (a full score of 7). Much higher than the San Diego bus system's average of 4.6 points.

The operating cost of traditional diesel buses is 3.1yuan per kilometer, compared with just 0.72 yuan per kilometer of BYD's all-electric bus, Mr Li said.

Santiago is in the central valley of central Chile, sometimes plagued by haze. The Chilean government is working to promote electrification of electric vehicles and public transport, with plans to increase the number of electric vehicles tenfold by 2022. Currently, there are nearly 7000 buses in San Diego, and about 400 buses need to be replaced each year. The Chilean government encourages bus operators to choose all-electric buses.

"We are the first generation to be affected by climate change, and the last generation to act on it. We will achieve the seemingly impossible goal: soon Santiago will be the largest city in the world with the largest number of electric buses in addition to Chinese cities. This is the road map and the future of our bus system. " Said Pinera.
